The Nature Reserve Lower Prut, the eco-tourist attraction No 1 from Moldova
The Nature Reserve Lower Prut won the place I at the Eco-tourist Attractions category at the World Tourism Day, the 2024 edition.

Protection, preservation and studying of the swamp and flood plain ecosystem
The Lower Prut reserve was created on 23 April 1991, under a Moldovan Government’s Decision, on an area of 1,755.4 hectares. It is placed in the south-western region of Moldova, along the lower course of the Prut river, the last big tributary of Danube. The reserve is flanked by the settlements Slobozia Mare and Valeni. The Manta Lake is situated 20 km to the north and the Brates lake (Romania) – 25 km to the south.
The goal of the reserve’s setting up was to protect, preserve and study the swamp and flood plain ecosystem and create friendly conditions for the reproduction of rare species, of extinguishing ones and other species of plants and animals.
The universal value of the natural heritage was recognized through its declaring as wet area of international importance, especially as habitat of water birds - Ramsar Convention Lakes of Lower Prut.
Route No 1
Begins with the platform of watching, placed on the slopes nearby the reserve. From here, one can see the panorama of the Beleu Lake from height.
Contacted by MOLDPRES, the former environment minister, presently presidential adviser in the field Iuliana Cantaragiu said the Beleu Lake had an age of 5,000-6,000 years and is home for many species of birds, fishes and water plants.
Route No 2
For adults, in case of small groups, when the water’s level allows moving on the water area of the Beleu Lake, one can visit the water route. It starts at the headquarters of the Reserve, where species of white water lily can be seen.
Starting from April, tourists can see from distance numerous species of birds which have come from thousands of km to give birth to their offsprings. The clear water of the lake allows seeing, with unassisted eyes, the water world, represented by more species of birds.
Presently, renovation works are carried out at the old headquarters of the Lower Prut scientific reserve, in order to create accommodation spaces for tourists willing to escape the daily routine and the urban agglomeration. So, just plan a week-end vacation starting from September. There is an area for camping there for people fond of tents.
