Chisinau, 4 October /MOLDPRES/ -

Moldova’s citizens on 20 October 2024 will participate in a constitutional referendum, during which they will answer the question: ‘’Do you support the amendment of the Constitution for Moldova’s accession to the European Union?’’

The results of the plebiscite will represent ground, if most residents answer affirmatively to this question, for the amendment of Moldova’s Constitution, so that the European integration’s desideratum should be compulsory for all governances due to come.

„If a large number people go to the referendum and opt for the European integration way, this will be an extra obligation for the European Union to cover also the next stages as quickly as possible.’’ The president of the European Parliament’s Delegation for Relations for Moldova, Siegfried Muresan, made statements to this effect at a joint conference with Deputy Parliament Speaker Doina Gherman.

Muresan noted that the European Union monitored and knew about the attempts to influence the electoral process. ‘’The European Parliament will a send a mission for the observation of the elections on 20 October. It is quite important that the people are able to vote freely, according to their own conscience, and stay far from any attempt of influencing by illicit means. The people must be strong and act according to their constitutional right to vote secretly and according to their own conscience,’’ Siegfried Muresan said.

Deputy Parliament Speaker Doina Gherman said that the Moldovan governance every day proved strong political will and a firm commitment to the country’s European integration way.

„The referendum due on 20 October is our chance as country to strengthen the European direction in the Constitution.  We should show the entire world that Moldova wants a safe and prosperous future in the great European family. We are confident that the Moldovans will choose the European way, where there is surely care for people, better living conditions, where there is peace and good understanding. Moldova is also well-prepared for the accession process. We have the administrative capacity and we have very dedicated people in each institution, who do their job well. It is important that we emphasize that we are conscious that the European integration way is a long one and quite complex. We understand that we are still at the beginning of road, but the most important thing is for us to know that we are not alone on this way. In this process of European integration, not only the European Union makes effort, but also Moldova actively contributes to the EU’s security and stability. We, in Moldova, have managed to preserve the peace and this means a stronger, safer and prosperous Union,’’ Gherman said.

The deputy parliament speaker also said that Moldova was closer to its European goal than ever.

„Having confidence in its citizens, in its partners, as well as in its European historical destiny, we will surely manage to bring Europe home on 20 October,’’ Doina Gherman added.
