EU welcomes referendum outcome

Chisinau, Oct 22 /MOLDPRES/- The European Union welcomes the referendum result. Moldovan citizens have made the historic choice to anchor their future within the European Union, despite massive interference and a hybrid campaign by Russia and its agents to undermine the democratic vote in Moldova. European Union Delegation to Chisinau made the statement on Tuesday.

The European Union congratulated the authorities for organizing the electoral process and the referendum in line with democratic standards.

"On October 20, Moldova's citizens voted in the first round of the presidential elections and referendum. The European Union welcomes the outcome of the referendum. The Moldovan citizens have made the historic choice to anchor their future within the European Union, despite massive interference and a hybrid campaign by Russia and its agents to undermine the democratic vote in the Republic of Moldova. This vote reflects their aspirations for a peaceful, independent, stable, democratic and prosperous Moldova," the EU Delegation to Chisinau said.

The EU also condemns "Russia's unprecedented malign interference in the presidential elections and constitutional referendum in the Republic of Moldova. "We will continue to support the resilience and progress of the Republic of Moldova on its path towards EU membership," the EU delegation to Chisinau announced.

Presidential elections and republican constitutional referendum were held in the Republic of Moldova on 20 October. 50.38% (750,075) of voters said YES in the referendum and 49.62% (738,799) voted NO.
