Foreign Affairs Ministry says significant increase in number of Moldovan citizens from abroad who voted till 10:00

Chisinau, 3 November /MOLDPRES/ - As many as 30,200 Moldovan citizens from abroad voted at the runoff election till 10:00. The Foreign Affairs Ministry (MAE) noted that the number of citizens going to vote in the Diaspora had significantly increased against the first round of the ballot. Queues appeared at some polling stations.     

„Exemplary mobilization of the Diaspora at the vote! In different regions of the world, the Moldovans do their civic duty and come to polling stations. Congratulations to everybody for the civic spirit and patience! The vote of each person matters and it is impressive that we see this unity abroad. We thank everybody for involvement and dedication,’’ MAE said.      

Today, the Moldovans from all over the world are expected to come to vote at the polling stations from 37 countries. The first votes for the presidential elections in Moldova today were given in Tokyo, Japan, 8,500 km far from the country. Eleven Moldovan tourists were the first to come to the polling station placed at the headquarters of Moldova’s Embassy in Tokyo.  

According to the Central Electoral Commission, at 9:00, Moldova’s time, 32 polling stations started working in several European states: Ireland, the United Kingdom and Portugal. At the same time, also the 21 polling stations from the USA and Canada are to open in the next hours.   

In all, 291,153 electors exercised their right to vote till 10:00, which represents 10.58 per cent. A voter turnout of a bit more than 7 per cent was recorded in the first round of the ballot.
