European Investment Bank to back programme on Moldova's afforestation with 200 million euros

Chisinau, 27 November /MOLDPRES/ - The government today approved a draft law for the ratification of the contract on financing between Moldova and the European Investment Bank (EIB) worth 200 million euros. The financing agreement is meant for implementation of the Project, Programme on Development of Forests from Moldova, signed in Chisinau on 17 September 2024. 

Under the decision, the implementation of this programme will take place in different regions of the country, ensuring the sustainable development of Moldova’s forestry sector.

“The financing of 200 million euros comes with the support of the National Programme on Extension and Rehabilitation of Forests (PNERP) and sees the planting and rehabilitation of over 63,000 hectares of forests during 2024-2028, about 44 per cent of the PNERP’s goal. The programme will provide support, in order to improve the way the forests are managed and the regulatory framework in the forestry sector. At the same time, investments will be made in the modernization of the forest infrastructure, improvement of the process of production of the planting material, purchasing of equipment and instruments needed for the sustainable management of the forests in Moldova,’’ reads the document voted by the government.

PNERP has the goal to rehabilitate 145,000 hectares of forests and extend afforested area of Moldova up to 15 per cent in 2032.
