Chisinau, 30 November /MOLDPRES/ - The victims of Holodomor (Ukrainian Famine from the 1932-33 years) and of the famine organized in Bessarabia in 1946-47 were commemorated at a ceremony titled, Light a Candle of Memory, held at the headquarters of the Ukrainian House on 29 November. The event was organized by the National Congress of Ukrainians, the Community of Ukrainian Women, with the support of the Embassy of Ukraine in Moldova.
Attending the event were representatives of local authorities, diplomatic missions, churches, non-governmental and international organizations, as well as of education institutions.
The people present at the ceremony lighted each a candle and stood silent for one minute in the memory of the Holodomor’s victims. A prayer was made.
The president of the National Congress of Ukrainians from Moldova, Dmytro Lekartsev, expressed gratitude to all those 32 states which had recognized the Holodomor as genocide and, in particular, expressed gratitude to Moldova’s parliament, which unanimously adopted this decision on 24 November 2022.
Attending the event, a Moldovan MP, Oazu Nantoi, said that ‘’the Memory of the Holodomor will help Ukraine win and resist!’’
„During the years of Holodomor in Ukraine, 18 people died in each minute,’’ a representative of the Embassy of Ukraine in Moldova, Olesia Yurchenko, said.
At the end of the ceremony, the guests left a candle lighted at the Memory Wall and took an apple each – a symbol of hope, of memory and life. The event ended with the screening of a documentary about the Holodomor.
The Holodomor from Ukraine from the 1932-1933 years and the famine from Moldova in 1946-1947 are among the most terrible tragedies which left an unforgettable trace in the memory of the Ukrainian and Moldovan peoples. The event titled, Light a Candle of Memory, had the goal to raise the awareness of the public opinion about these historical events and the people’s union, in order to keep the memory of the tragic pages from the history of the two countries.
